Classified as “Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers” by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) during the COVID-19 pandemic, low-voltage technicians are often an overlooked section of workers in the community whose importance to the smooth running of community operations cannot be overstated. But who are they? and what do they do that makes them an integral part of the community?

Who are low voltage workers?

Also known as Low voltage wiring technicians, Low voltage workers are specialists who choose, install, and maintain low-voltage systems and cables.
Low voltage systems are systems that typically carry a rating of fewer than 50 volts, and often come with little or no risk of electrical fires or shocks. These range from alarm systems like security and fire alarms to communication and entertainment systems like TVs and telephones.

What makes low voltage technicians essential workers?

The Essential Services Act of 2013 defines an essential worker as “an employee that performs work involving the safety of human life or the protection of property.”
Many of the systems that we use today use and rely on some form of electric current, and for most use cases, it’s a low-voltage current.
Running and maintaining systems that are crucial to the safety of lives and smooth running of the economy is what makes Low voltage technicians an integral part of the community, and that’s why they are allowed to be out there working while the rest of the population is locked up.
